Open play: the sacred rotation

Most public courts run "open play": winners stay or everyone rotates, with waiting players queuing by stacking paddles in a holder or along the fence. The system varies by venue, but the principles don't:

Learn the local system before you jump in. Watch one rotation or just ask, "How does the paddle stack work here?" Every regular will happily explain — enforcing the stack is their favorite hobby.
Never skip the stack. Sliding into a game ahead of waiting players is the fastest way to become locally famous for the wrong reason.
Games to 11, then off. When courts are full, don't linger for "one more." Rack your paddle and rotate like everyone else, even if you won.
Mix in with all levels graciously. Open play means sometimes playing with beginners. Hit them playable balls, say something encouraging, and remember someone did it for you.

The ball on the court: "BALL ON!"

When a stray ball rolls onto an active court, yell "ball on court!" immediately and loudly. Play stops, the rally replays, no arguments. This is a safety rule dressed up as etiquette — stepping on a ball mid-lunge is how ankles end seasons. Likewise, when your ball escapes to a neighboring court, wait for their rally to finish, then ask for it. Never wander onto a live court.

Score-calling: loud, proud, and before the serve

Call the full score — all three numbers in doubles — clearly before you serve, not during your service motion. Mumbled or missing score calls cause half the disputes in recreational pickleball. If you're not sure of the score, ask before serving; rewinding three rallies of he-said-she-said is nobody's idea of fun.

Line calls: honor system, honored

Pickleball runs on player line calls, and the culture is unambiguous:

You call your side. Balls landing on your side are your call, made promptly.
Benefit of the doubt goes to your opponent. If you didn't clearly see it out, it's in. That's not softness; it's the actual rule.
Don't call lines for the other side — unless they ask you, in which case give your honest view.
Disagreement? Replay the point. No point in a rec game is worth the vibe damage of a standoff.

Between points: the paddle tap

Pickleball's version of the handshake is meeting at the net after every game to tap paddles (handle or face, your call) and say "good game." Win or lose, every time. Skipping the tap after a loss reads exactly how you think it does.

A few more that separate regulars from rookies

Return balls to the server, not at them. A gentle bounce or roll to the correct person keeps the game flowing. Firing a ball vaguely toward the other side is a small chaos crime.
Compliment great shots — including your opponents'. "Nice dink" costs nothing and is the currency of court friendship.
Keep coaching to yourself unless asked. Unsolicited mid-game lessons, however well-meant, land badly. If someone wants tips, they'll ask.
Watch the noise near residential courts. Some neighborhoods are in open warfare over pickleball pop sounds; don't add a 7 a.m. bluetooth speaker to the case against us.
Leave the court better than you found it. Pack out your water bottles, dead balls, and grip wrappers.
